Hi, I’m David — a Senior Product Lead at Shopify who builds systems that create leverage.

Building Foundations

I build platforms, not features. My focus is on creating the foundational components that enable others to solve problems at scale. Currently, I manage:

  • Shopify Polaris — Shopify’s design system that ensures consistent, accessible experiences across the platform
  • Shopify Functions — APIs that let developers customize Shopify’s backend logic while giving merchants user-friendly interfaces to configure them

With Shopify Flow, merchants can automate tasks that previously required manual work or hiring developers. With Functions, we’re taking the learnings from Shopify Scripts and making it easier for developers to build solutions while giving merchants the power to customize through web interfaces instead of code.

My goal is to expose the right parts of Shopify’s systems through APIs, solving more merchant problems by enabling a broader ecosystem of solutions.

Technical Product Manager

I’m a highly technical product manager who spends most of my time in terminal and code editors, constantly building with AI to learn and experiment. I believe the best way to understand complex systems is by working with them directly.

Always Tinkering

I’m constantly experimenting and learning by doing. Recent projects include:

  • Home automation with Home Assistant
  • Building holiday light displays using xLights and ws2811 LEDs
  • 3D printing and prototyping ideas that come up

Life Outside Work

I’m based in Kitchener, Ontario with my wife and two kids who keep me busy. I coach my kids’ sports teams and volunteer with their extracurricular activities. I also serve on the Board of Directors for Centre in the Square, helping bring great performances to our community.
